The Civil War - Groveland's Part**

Civil War Monument at Perry Park

Twenty-one men were required to be sent by the town of Groveland to take part in the War of the Rebellion.  The town meeting held in April of 1861 chose a committee to supply the soldiers called into active service with all the necessities, and the town paid them ten dollars a month.  This committee was also called upon to provided for the families of the soldiers during their absence.

An enlistment of three years was rewarded by a $100 payment in 1862 and later $150.00.  By 1864, the payment was $250.  By 1865, 185 men were enlisted from the town.  The cost to the town was $27,812.57.  Grand Army records state that there were actually 209 men in service, with four of those being in the Navy.  The balance were likely reenlistments.

A monument was erected in memory of the deceased soldiers, and dedicated in 1866.  It was later removed to Riverview Cemetery and then moved back to Perry Park in 1928.
